TOWARD ESTABLISHING reliability in moving down the road, I thought about a car salesperson who was showing a collector car to prospective buyers. I asked myself, “What if, when driving a classic car with a young couple, the sales pitch included information that previous owners had fought terribly over the paint color.., so much so that their relatives, neighbors and police often needed to be called? The previous owner’s arguments were so heated that eventually a marriage counselor was ordered by the court. Finally, consider that if the new couple proposing to buy the car were told that the previous couple divorced, and were subsequently ordered by a judge to maintain their distance from one another. However, the combative couple’s trouble persisted until they were forced to use lawyers to split their property. My question to you is… would that be a good selling conversation for a sale? I don’t think so. Telling the whole truth about a product is not always a welcomed sales technique… but it is still truth. Such is the dilemma for the Church. and the Life”. Our Lord laid it all out for his disciples… and Matthew told it truly… but our Lord included ample warning about what was to happen down the road. Dissonance occurred. Demons did not rest. Arguments continued. People still sinned after Jesus was crucified and Risen. “Why so?” we wonder. I believe it is about exercise of our Christian faith. I believe that our Lord was warning all of us that if we are to be part of the Church, as the disciples were in Matthew’s day… as sinful human beings we are to know in future days that disagreements small and large are going to occur. During these instances, as Christians, we must first remember that we are sinful. We are not perfect… if we were, Jesus would not have needed to go to the cross to save us. |
