After a period of time working as Jesus’ apprentices amongst those who would receive them, and rejecting those who would not... they returned to our Lord with gladness. They had been counted! They had been measured in their ministry for God in the world. They were thus empowered toward greater ministry in the future.

We need to take full measure of this lesson, for I believe that today we of the Church have lost the skill. We need to ask the Spirit to once again teach us to measure the world around us and send us out into our own society.

You see, though our communication abilities have grown bright in one sense,

they’ve gone dim in others. It’s like my trying to use an optical laser measurement that improves the skills of machinists, much improved since my apprenticeship days. We of the modern Church have failed to keep to the basic skills of witnessing. On the task of witnessing God’s grace, we’ve fallen into a sinful self-centeredness. In the face of resistance we have closed our tool boxes and returned to our sanctuaries. We do not follow our Lord’s instructions to witness to either our own people, or to do ministry to those who are farther removed from us on the scale of sinful humanity. We are measured every day by the Holy Spirit and find we are failing to do that task for which we were originally intended.

I therefore challenge you as a Christian. I ask you what is it that we are to do in the present time… in this present working environment? I offer that if we take the timeless power of

scripture as preserved by the Holy Spirit, we may look closely today at Jesus’ instructions. Then in micro-management style, we can look at what Jesus told his disciples to do.

He said, “What I tell you in the dark, utter in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim upon the housetops.” He said, To preach as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
