made his daily trips to work a very pleasant ride. The Oldsmobile was his first new car. It was just after that day when my father taught me to drive. True to character in giving instructions he was patient. He was kind and he was firm. I had driven a farm tractor for several years at a job on a nearby farm, but my dad insisted on providing several weeks of driving instructions. And, it was at least a month after I got my driver’s license before I was allowed to take the Olds out by myself. When I did, I carefully adjusted the seat position, checked the mirrors and started the engine. He watched me put it in “R” and carefully back out of the driveway. Once in “D”, I drove several blocks away from home to an open paved street next to an abandoned factory. I stopped there and turned the radio to my favorite country music station then punched the accelerator to the floor. |
The response from that big dinosaur was amazing… far beyond any tractor I’d previously driven in the fields. But the car didn’t go the route I expected. It veered to the left as rubber burned and headed toward a utility pole. My reaction to get on the brake was real fast, but not quite fast enough. To describe the sound to you, let me say there was a “SNAP… and POP”. The sound came from the utility pole. It sounded off, but didn’t break when hit. I’d slowed the car just enough, so that the pole complained and just whipped back and forth. I sat stunned behind the wheel for a few moments. Fearing the worst, I backed the Olds slowly away from the pole. I got out of the car and found the pole was only slightly dented. However, the Oldsmobile’s front end was completely unharmed… even though I’d hit the pole dead center. You see, that Olds |
