Where the scientist eventually fell into mystery trying to explain the origin of the universe, the theologian did not reinforce his creationist position biblically as founded in faith.

First let me say that neither a scientific looking to the skies, nor exploration of the depths of either sea or space, will prove a divine existence. Despite brilliant minds, this argumentation has entertained coffee table evenings at least since the days of the Enlightenment. These dialogs merely point us toward our Creator, that one who gives us faith as a gift. In debating the dating for the universe, between sips of congenial

bourbon, the scientist within us often reaches for a foundation based on estimates from the occasion of the primal explosion, tracing back to that position and then calculating acceleration rate of present stars racing ever faster toward the far away outer banks of space and time.

The theologian conversation counters then from the biblical book of Genesis, saying that stars were created and set in motion by God amid the seven days of Creation.

The first imbiber works thus in scientific theory; the latter from faith history. Both fervently defend their particular slant on the origins of the universe until the Jim Beam bottle is

emptied. Laypersons around the table thus ask, “How does it make a difference?”

Getting Torqued?

Let me offer my own theory here. It’s much like the patterning a ring and pinion while shimming an automobile’s differential. If we accept the initial shim that’s placed into the narrative of scripture, we observe a pattern. We note that Adam was created as an adult human being and was not embryonic. Thus being only a nanosecond old he would appear to the observer as fully grown. As well, he is storied as standing in an already developed garden. With this observation could it not be also said of all that was created was as fully developed… earth, stars, seas, plants, bugs, fish, etc., etc., etc.? Therefore we do not need shim adjustment. Could we not in Genesis be reading a pattern of a creation which is young, but appears to be old? Is this a pattern created perfectly even to having preset age lines and evolutional fish compressed in layered strata of rocks?

Does this thought describe God as having a majestic sense of humor, who prompts a myriad of questions
