Does this argument then hold that the foundation for all things and all history is God? I think so. It places inquisitive man as caught in logic by Ockham’s Razor! The simplest explanation takes priority. We are also caught by logic about that which we can know in certainty. We end up with Blaise Pascal’s existential wager. He argued to the point that in observation we cannot be sure of anything. The spiritual vacancy found in his logical, scientifically-famed conclusions drove him from worthy scientific pursuits into participation in a monastery community. Pascal, who discovered the laws of hydraulics that are our foundation for today’s automotive brakes, so left his scientific work to serve God in another fashion. Such is scientific inquiry and the state of theological striving today. The pursuit of knowing God and Jesus as the Way, the Truth and the Life drives us yet around Bible Study tables! Consequently, the scientific dating of Grand Canyon sediment layers looms large for the scientist, but thoughts for theologians are not about sedimentary deposit dating. For theologians, the canyon represents the spiritual chasm placed between we who are mortals and the divine person of God. This divide is caused by our sin and unbelief. We cannot cross that divide! We are sinful and as such do not have the power to jump that far. So as theologian Paul Tillich espoused, our Creator sent Jesus into the natural, created realm to save us. To quote Tillich, we say that Jesus crossed the chasm for us as the “kerygmatic eschatological manifestation of the ground of our being.” Subsequently by writing this mouthful statement, Tillich said God is the very basis of our existence. Though we are sinful. . . Jesus, his Sent One, shows us God’s creative mercy through the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus, God accomplished our salvation, which is a mystery far |
greater than any scientist or theologian can understand. In Jesus, who was and is the Christ of God, theologians can know the divine nature as simply revealed. The Holy Spirit teaches us that our Infinite God became finite man to show us mercy! Sent by the Father, the Word which created all things became human. He was born as a peaceful warrior who fought against the estrangement caused by our sinful unbelief. God’s creative love was thus the driving |
force for our rescue from the demonic. If we really want to ponder a fantastic mystery… let us wrestle with this one just a bit longer. With these thoughts in mind, know also that the Church is now steered down the road of dealing with such heresy as social Darwinism, This evil modern philosophy now grown into “progressivism” attempts to push Christianity into the categorization of being a quaint crutch for the less educated. This core of Marxist and socialist thought attempts to make Christianity extinct and use spiritual vacancy as a tool for ruling society around the world. Let us therefore not buy into the mindset or spiritual vacuum that augments going down this road. Jesus Christ was crucified and died for our sake. He rose again and is seated at the right hand of the Father, and shall come again to judge both the scientist and the creationist. |
